Counseling

Counseling for
children & teens

Most families start by searching for therapy. At MindWeal, we help you start smarter — with a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation that ensures counseling is precise and effective.

WHY WE DON’T START WITH JUST THERAPY

Why start with a comprehensive
evaluation?

In children and teens, symptoms often overlap.

Anxiety can look like ADHD

ADHD can look like behavior problems

Autism-related challenges can resemble social anxiety

Trauma can look like mood instability

Sleep issues can affect focus, mood, and behavior

When therapy begins without understanding what’s driving symptoms, families can spend months working hard without meaningful progress.

At MindWeal, we start with a Comprehensive Psychiatric Evaluation so counseling is aimed at the true root cause — not guesswork.

WHO WE SUPPORT

When counseling is the right next step?

Counseling is a practical, structured support that helps children and teens handle
emotions, stress, and everyday challenges more effectively.

Counseling is often the first-line approach for:

1

Emotions & mood

  • Anxiety, worry, panic
  • Sadness, low motivation
  • Emotional overwhelm

2

Behavior & regulation

  • Tantrums, irritability
  • Impulsivity or defiance
  • Shutdown or withdrawal

3

School & focus concerns

  • Homework battles
  • Organization struggles
  • School refusal

4

Social & developmental concerns

  • Friendship difficulties
  • Social anxiety
  • Distress with change

5

Eating & body-related concerns

  • Body image distress
  • Food restriction
  • Binge-purge behaviors

6

Trauma & stress

  • Major transitions
  • Loss or family stress
  • Persistent fears after difficult experiences

If therapy alone is appropriate, we will say that clearly and
help you move forward confidently.

A CLEAR PATH FROM EVALUATION TO THERAPY

How it works at MindWeal

We’ve designed the process to be thorough, predictable, and parent-friendly
—so families know what to expect

Complete M-Wise at home

Parents complete our structured diagnostic system before the visit. It gathers over 1,300 clinically relevant data points so we understand your child deeply.

 60-minute clinical visit

We review the data, ask targeted questions, and build a whole-child understanding of symptoms, development, school, and functioning.

A therapy-centered plan (when appropriate)

If counseling is recommended, we translate the evaluation into a clear therapy plan: what you’re working on, what progress should look like, and what goals will guide sessions. We also recommend the therapy approach most likely to help — such as CBT, exposure-based therapy, parent coaching, or trauma-focused therapy — and note any additional supports that could strengthen outcomes, like school accommodations, sleep changes, targeted testing, or medication.

Connection to the right therapist

We connect families to providers within the MindWeal Therapy Network — a curated group of trusted therapy partners organized by region, specialty, insurance participation, and availability.

Providers in the MindWeal Therapy Network are selected based on alignment with our diagnostic standards and treatment philosophy.

When appropriate, we coordinate directly to align goals and treatment planning so care remains connected and consistent.

WHAT’S NEXT

What happens after therapy begins

Counseling is not “set it and forget it.” We typically schedule a re-check
around 4–6 months to assess:

Family in therapy session

Is therapy working as expected?

Are new symptoms emerging?

Should we adjust the plan?

Additional services are only added if truly needed:

  • Medication Management
  • ADHD Testing
  • Executive Functioning Testing
  • School Documentation & Accommodations

Medication is never automatic. Testing is never rushed. Counseling remains central when appropriate.
