Comprehensive Psychiatric Evaluation

Comprehensive psychiatric evaluation for children & teens

The starting point for clear answers, accurate diagnosis, and a treatment plan that actually fits your child.

THE REASON

Why start with a comprehensive
psychiatric evaluation

In children and teens, the same behaviors can have very different causes. Anxiety can look like ADHD. Learning differences can show up as “behavior problems.” Social skill deficits of autism can mimic social anxiety. And sometimes what feels alarming is actually part of normal development. That’s why quick checklists and short intake visits often miss the mark.

A comprehensive psychiatric evaluation at MindWeal gives us a full picture of your child’s mental health. At MindWeal, we don’t start by asking, “Which diagnosis fits?” We start by asking, “What is truly driving these changes — and what will actually help this child thrive?”

What we evaluate – carefully & completely

We look beyond symptoms to understand the whole child.

Mental health conditions

Mood disorders, anxiety, ADHD, learning issues, autism spectrum conditions, trauma-related symptoms, and more.

Developmental context

What’s expected for your child’s age, and what falls outside typical development.

Family and school environment

Relationships, routines, school performance, peer dynamics, and stress at home or in school.

Medical and sleep factors

Medical history, current & past medication trials, sleep quality & routines, and physical factors that can affect mood, focus or behavior.

Life stressors & environment

Major life changes, losses or transitions; social media, cultural factors, and daily demands that shape how your child feels and functions.

Our goal isn’t to rush to a label — it’s to understand the root cause of your child’s struggles, so treatment is targeted, thoughtful, and truly effective.

WHO WE SUPPORT

Is this evaluation right for your child?

This evaluation is designed for children and teens ages 4–18 with emotional,
behavioral, learning, or developmental concerns—especially when symptoms overlap
or the path forward isn’t obvious. It’s also a strong starting point if you’re considering
beginning, changing, or re-evaluating treatment.

You may recognize your child’s struggles in one or more of these areas:

1

Focus & learning

  • Inattention, distractibility, or daydreaming.
  • Hyperactivity, restlessness, or constant motion
  • Homework struggles or organization challenges
  • Poor grades or teacher concerns

2

Behavior & emotions

  • Frequent tantrums or emotional outbursts
  • Aggression, impulsivity, or rule-breaking
  • Withdrawal, shutdowns, or isolation
  • Behavior that feels “out of character”
  • Sudden or repetitive movements, sounds, or urges your child can’t fully control

3

Mood & anxiety

  • Persistent sadness, irritability, or low motivation
  • Excessive worry, panic, or physical anxiety symptoms
  • Emotional ups and downs or walking on eggshells
  • Sleep problems, nightmares, or difficulty winding down
  • Intrusive thoughts, or repeated worries that are hard to let go
  • Compulsions or rituals to reduce anxiety

4

Neurodevelopmental concerns

  • Difficulty reading social cues
  • Strong need for routines or distress with change
  • Sensory sensitivities (noise, light, textures, crowds)
  • Questions about autism or other developmental disorders

5

Eating & body-related concerns

  • Significant changes in eating habits or appetite
  • Fear of weight gain, body image distress, or rigid food rules
  • Avoidance of meals, food restriction, or binge–purge behaviors

6

Trauma & stress

  • Changes after a loss, move, illness, or family stress
  • New fears, clinginess, or avoidance
  • Statements or experiences that seem disconnected from reality or cause significant confusion or fear

If you’re unsure whether your child “fits,” this evaluation was
built for exactly these gray-area situations.

WHAT’S NEXT

What happens after your evaluation

Your child’s comprehensive evaluation is the starting point—not the finish line. The insights we
gain don’t sit in a report; they become a clear, practical roadmap that guides what
comes next, based on your child’s specific needs.

Service Pathways you may move into

Medication Management

When medication is part of the plan, care continues through thoughtful, ongoing medication management. We monitor your child’s response, adjust doses carefully, and regularly check in on how they are feeling and functioning at home and school. Medication is always approached deliberately and as part of a broader treatment plan.

Counseling & Therapy

For many children, counseling or therapy is the first line of treatment—with or without medication. If your child already has a therapist, we coordinate closely with them to ensure care is aligned. If not, we can connect you with trusted community partners or, when appropriate, with our own therapists.

No matter the setting, our psychiatric team works collaboratively with therapists to carry out the comprehensive treatment plan. Therapy focuses on building coping skills, improving emotional regulation, and helping your child apply new strategies in daily life.

ADHD Testing

If questions remain about attention, learning, or school performance, targeted ADHD testing may be recommended. This helps clarify whether challenges are due to ADHD, learning differences, or another underlying factor—so treatment and school supports are appropriately matched.

Learn more
Executive Functioning Testing

When your child is bright and capable but still struggles to get started, stay organized, manage time, or finish what they begin, executive functioning testing helps explain why.

This assessment looks at the skills that support planning, focus, and follow-through—especially in school—and helps families understand why effort alone isn’t enough. With clarity, we can move away from frustration and toward the right supports and strategies.
