Neuropsychological testing can be very helpful in the right situations, but many children do not need that level of testing from the beginning. It is often a longer process with wait times to get scheduled, several hours of testing, and additional time to receive results. It can also be costly and may provide more information than is actually needed.
MindWeal follows a stepwise approach. We start with a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation to determine whether testing is needed at all and, if so, which testing is most likely to provide useful answers.
In many cases, targeted ADHD or executive functioning evaluation may provide the clarity needed. Attention and executive functioning concerns are common contributors to school difficulties and often have clearer treatment pathways. When these concerns are identified as the primary issue and appropriately addressed, broader neuropsychological testing may no longer be needed.
Additionally, attention difficulties can sometimes affect how children perform on broader cognitive testing. In some cases, untreated attention concerns may make it harder for a child to fully demonstrate their abilities, which can make results less representative of their true strengths and challenges. This stepwise approach helps ensure that broader testing, when needed, is more targeted, meaningful, and accurate.
